Intent speaks to Lisa about her latest album launch and how her values have inherently influenced her personal style.

Warriors will be your third studio album, almost exactly four years after the second. How does it differ from Wonder and Bless This Mess?

Warriors is different because I worked with a new producer—Eric J Dubowsky—rather than Dann Hume, who I worked with on my first two albums. Warriors is this weird amalgamation of a bazillion parts of me—stylistically, it features the beauty and sass of modern day pop, while maintaining a deep respect for the beautiful instruments and acoustic voices that have inspired me since the beginning.

You worked with Eric Dubowsky on Warriors as Producer, who has previously worked with Flume, Chet Faker, Flight Facilities, St Vincent and even Kylie Minogue. How important was the connection between the two of you in shaping this record?

I rose to the challenge to work with Eric Dubowsky. I say, ‘challenge’, because he is in a slightly different orbit of music than the ones I usually move in. Flight Facilities and Flume are both huge (and awesome) artists whose sounds are very ‘pop’ and very produced. I am a bit old school—I come from music first, tech and production second. So this world of Eric Dubowsky is one that is foreign, and really fun and big and shiny. I love trying things. And I love the album we made!

You’ve labelled Warriors as a ‘personal’ album. How is this more personal to you in comparison to your two previous records?

Songwriting to me is generally super personal! I only write when I’m really moved to. So I actually wouldn't say that Warriors is any more personal than my other albums; however, it feels very real and raw for me now as these songs are about events in my life that are recent history. I draw a lot on my childhood in this album. I am fascinated by what I wanted and cared about as a young person, while still 'under the wing' of my family. Fourteen and fifteen is a really powerful age—you're still under the shelter of being a kid, yet you are just so full of dreams. A lot of real tears and grit and beautiful moments went into this album.

“I interned at an organic and biodynamic vegetable farm a few years ago, and this really deepened my passion for loving and developing wise relationships with our beautiful earth.”

What do you wish to communicate about yourself via your style / clothing choices?

For me, my outfit says so much! Or, it can just say, ‘I’m going for a swim’, ha. Most of my wardrobe is made up of secondhand tee shirts, blouses, pieces from friends’ labels, (for example, MATIN and Vege Threads) as well as lots of navy linen. I’m also really into Good Studios’ hemp linen pants—I have two pairs! I think my style is 40s sailor meets 90s raver!

How do your values influence the way you engage with fashion?

I love to wear secondhand and vintage clothing, or new organic fabrics when I can, as organic farming is a passion of mine. I interned for a few months at an organic and biodynamic vegetable farm a few years ago, and this really deepened my passion for loving and developing wise relationships with our beautiful earth. I also don’t wear leather, as I love animals and don’t currently feel the need to kill or use them to survive.

Something that interests us at Intent is the psychology of fashion and people’s relationships with clothing. How would you describe your own relationship with clothing; has it evolved over the years?

I haven’t always cared so much about what I buy. My mum and dad weren’t hippies or anything, but when I was 19 or 20 I really woke up to how special the earth is. I wasn’t treating my body very well at the time, so decided to learn how to with the help of a naturopath/healer. This link now makes so much sense to me. Once I learned how to listen to, love and respect myself and in turn my body, I realised that I also knew how to have real compassion for others and our beloved planet, as well as other species. That was definitely a turning point for me in my life. But hey, I’m no perfect human, believe me! I just try to listen and be present when I’m making decisions around buying ‘stuff.’ For my latest tour, my merchandise is a collection of secondhand tee shirts with some of my lyrics embroidered on them! The only issue is, my managers and I are reluctant to sell them because we want them all to ourselves, hehe.

What does the Slow Fashion movement mean to you?

Slow living is such a cool concept. I think slow fashion to me is an attitude—there is an element of sacrifice involved. It can be expensive too! I ordered 100% recycled card for my CDs and vinyl album covers and yes, it cost us more! But it’s how I live and I just had to go with it because it feels right. It’s not for the faint hearted! It’s rebellion! I love trying to live this way.

When looking at the current fashion system, what do you believe needs to change and why?

The way natural fibres are farmed needs to change. Ideally, we’d only have organic farming, which of course is how it used to be. The chemicals in the fertilisers are toxic; they go into the water stream, harm the farmers, go into our food as well as onto our skin—our largest organ—when wearing fabrics. They cause birth defects! We are literally slowing killing ourselves. It is strange, and to a degree I understand it, but I believe the time for change is upon us. Go world!

You have an upcoming nationwide tour in October; what can we expect from it?

I’m super pumped for my shows! The album comes out at the same time, so it’s like Lisa-Christmas-time in my camp! I have some incredible musicians on board, and I’ll be wearing some awesome pieces from an up-and-coming designer, Georgie Spillane, mixed with vintage.

Which artist in particular would you love to collaborate with, and why?

Well, there are people that I admire. But for me it is more about the feeling, rather than what they’ve done, or ‘who’ they are. I am open to collaborating when it’s that really spontaneous, fun feeling. It could happen at any moment!

Your public music journey started almost exactly ten years ago, and has been quite the evolution since then. Who is Lisa Mitchell in five years time?

Me in five years time... You know what, I used to really know. I used to be like, ‘Yup, easy. Farm, husband, babies, Australia, woop!’ Now I have the winds of change tugging at my hair again. I want to walk the Camino, I want to visit Peru and other South American countries. I’m 26 and I feel like I’m just getting started!

Thanks so much for featuring me in INTENT !!! Lisa xo
